They’re Troublemakers Formed around the lyrically intensive songwriting and vocals of Matthew Milia, folk-rock group Frontier Ruckus has been heaping on the praise in their home state of Michigan and steadily gaining fans across the country with a sound that inspires music critics to spout poetic about youthful hope and the waning days of autumn. Incorporating banjo, trumpet and musical saw into an Americana/bluegrass style with rock sensibilities, the band is touring the country as they promote their newest release, Way Upstate & the Crippled Summer, pt. 1. But We Love Them So Our favorite, sexy, vintage garage rockers the Love Me Nots will be returning to Flag before heading off to Europe as they tour to promote their new album Upsidedown Insideout. The Phoenix-based foursome has since added a new drummer, been praised in publications internationally and had tracks included on the FX show “Rescue Me.” See them at the Monte V, 100 N. Head For, er … Away from the Hills! Descending from the hills of northern California like some unstoppable, raging inferno, the five-piece band Hillside Fire is aptly named as they burn up their local music scene with their handcrafted style of hard rock, funk and blues. It’s a Palooza Alright Celebrating local music in all of its tasty diversity, the first (most likely annual) music festival Flagapalooza will showcase some of Flag’s best homegrown talent. Included in the night-long lineup on two stages will be country-rockers Gravy, rowdy-rockers Whiskey Rodeo, folk-rockers Dave McGraw and Crow Wing, Americana-pop incarnation Nolan McKelvey and the Civilian Contemplation Corps, Celtic pub band the Knockabouts and singer-songwriter-siren Aly Jay. There will also be local sustainable foods provided by Jonathon Netzky and Local Alternatives Catering, and the event will help to preserve a part of local history with a portion of the proceeds benefiting the Riordan Action Network, which is working to save the Riordan Mansion from closure. Cesar Says Jump On One Foot Bringing to life the iconic, Latino civil rights advocate Cesar Chavez, Arizona playwright, actor and mask-maker Zarco Guerrero will present his original musical play “Cesar Says.” Guerrero will portray the life of the historical figure through music, masked characters and humorous storytelling at the Museum of Northern Arizona, 3101 N. So Green It Makes Kermit Look Albino Bringing together the author of “The Green-Collar Economy” and former environmental advisor to President Obama Van Jones with local youth leader and founder of the Energy Action Coalition Billy Parrish, the NAU Provost Speaker Series will host the presentation “Challenging America: Achieving Sustainability and Justice Through the Green Collar Economy.” The event will be start at 4 p.m. in the du Bois ballroom on Pine Knoll Drive on the NAU campus and is free and open to the public. Polish up That Grill Becoming one of the major players in the Houston hip-hop scene with his debut record The Sound of Revenge and dubbed the “Mixtape Messiah,” rapper Chamillionaire first collaborated with fellow rapper Paul Wall as part of Swishahouse. The two are now headlining the In Love with my Money Tour as they promote soon-to-be-released albums and will stop in Flag for a show at the Orpheum Theater, 15 W. Suddenly the Eurythmics Make Sense In a relatively new style of performance art, dancers from the American Eurythmy School in California will be in Flagstaff to present “Resurrection,” a performance piece that will include music and poetry by Chopin, Tchaikovsky, Beethoven, Henry David Thoreau, T.S. Eliot and others to “literally make visible what is heard” by connecting movements to the sound and rhythms of language and music. The performance will be at 7 p.m. in Sinagua High School, 3950 E.
