The Superman Blues
Like a hooker at the church bake sale, Austin, Texas, duo The
Lonesome Heroes don’t quite belong solely in the country
scene with a sound that walks the line between psychedelic rock
and alt-country. Songwriters Rich Russell and Landry McMeans
merged their New York and Texas roots to form a style they equate
to Pasty Cline meets the Velvet Underground. See the pair in Flag
as they tour to promote their upcoming debut album at Mia’s
Lounge, 26 S. San Francisco, at 9 p.m. Call 774-3315 or check out

Marco …
Three-piece California group Fish Out of Water blends
together rock and funk with reggae and hip-hop to create a high-
energy performance (which is inexplicably done in bath robes).
They’ve shared stages with artists like G. Love and the Wailers, and
they’ll be coming through Flag to promote their third album The
Dream. See them at Flag Brew, 16 E. Rte. 66, at 10 p.m. For
more info, call 773-1442 or see www.fishoutofwaterhq.com

Finally, a Toast to Drinking
Feeling the pressure of that long haul between New Year’s and St.
Patrick’s Day where excessive, boisterous drunkenness is frowned
upon? Well get out those mugs because Uptown Billiards is
welcoming all to the official Great Guinness Toast. The
designated toast master will read the toast and the number of
participants will be recorded and sent to Guinness in Dublin, so
make Flagstaff proud. There will, of course, be live music from
The Knockabouts who haven’t missed a single toast in
seven years. It all starts at 9 p.m. at Uptown, 114 N. Leroux. For
more info, call 773-0551.
What a Beautiful Story
The trio that forms Long Beach rock band Bella Novella
met while working as counselors at a rock ‘n’ roll summer camp and
would sneak away at night to play music they have come to label
“spaghetti-western wizard rock.” See them at the Monte V, 100 N.
San Francisco, with fellow Long Beach rockers The Soft
Hands and Tucson punk-rock group Hypnogogs.
Showtime is 10 p.m. For more, call 774-2403 or check out www.myspace.com/bel

A Bogguss Journey

Flagstaff as she tours to promote the record at the Orpheum

Better than the Wartime Polka
Layering together instruments like banjo, organ, cello, electric guitar
and the saw with potent vocals creates an intriguing indie-
Americana style that you might not expect from Montana, but eight-
piece group Wartime Blues has been packing venues in
their hometown of Missoula and are hitting the road to promote their
new album Doves and Drums. See them in Flag at the Monte
V, 100 N. San Francisco, at 10 p.m. To get more info, call 774-2403
