The month of February celebrates the heart in several ways, whether nurturing (or torturing) it on that most notorious of love-themed holidays, or trying to keep it in prime operating condition with National Heart Month. So to keep in the spirit of things, the Art Walk will be offering chocolate goodies at galleries and businesses across town (look for the chocolate heart on the guide if you want to find the most direct route to the good stuff) for both your physical and emotional health. So get out there and feel the love.
The Old Town Shops
If you like chocolate, wine and cutesy rhyme schemes, then head for the Old Town Shops where they’re hosting “Heart Talk at the Art Walk” from 6–9 p.m. Because February is National Heart Month, the Heart and Vascular Center of Northern Arizona is partnering with the businesses of the Old Town Shops to offer heart-healthy goodies and information. Brookside Chocolate will be offering dark chocolates and chocolate-covered fruit, Vino Loco will have a red wine tasting and Pesto Bros. will have healthy Italian appetizers. Meanwhile, cardiologists from the Heart and Vascular Center will be present to answer questions and give out information about maintaining a healthy heart.
As long as you’re there, stop in to Black Hound Gallerie to see urban art by Kory B. from the Black Sheep Art Collective and make some Valentine’s cookies with the youngins.
Sage Brush Trading Co. will be displaying the handmade jewelry by artists Andrea Ferguson and Hannah Gruver Green. And down in the basement, Bigfoot BBQ will be serving up samples from the monthly suckling pig roast (just don’t tell the cardiologists). 120 N. Leroux. www.oldtownshops.net
Flagstaff Photography Center
Just across Heritage Square is February’s Art Walk hot spot—the Flag Photo Center. From 6–11 p.m. FPC is throwing a Snow Ball. There’ll be live music by local band Clover and the notorious one-man musical experiment I Hate You When You’re Pregnant, a cash bar and prizes, and a photobooth contest presided over by Mayor Sara. DJ Rey Love will be providing the tunes for the dance party, and there is a $10 cover after 9 p.m. 107 N. San Francisco, Ste. 3. For more info, call 774-2544 or visit www.flagstaffphotographycenter.com.
The Shane Knight Gallery
Always a shining beacon of beautiful art work, it’s hard to pass by the Shane Knight Gallery and not feel impelled to take a closer look at his gorgeous, large-format photographs. With his preferred subject matter of dramatic landscapes and western horses, Knight still does things the old fashioned way, using real film to make his Cibachrome and silver gelatin prints. So it’s no surprise that their chocolate goodies for the evening will also be homemade. 10 E. Rte. 66. Call 525-1455 or see www.shaneknight.com for more.
Fire on the Mountain and Arizona Handmade
In addition to its diverse regular collection of paintings, sculpture, woodwork, jewelry and the hand-blown glass creations of George Averbeck, Arizona Handmade and the Fire on the Mountain gallery will be displaying a special collection of 12 original watercolors by renowned Grand Canyon artist Serena Supplee. Her richly colored and playful paintings of the canyon and the Colorado River are a welcome contrast to typical Grand Canyon-inspired art. Supplee will be hiking out of Phantom Ranch just for the occasion to meet gallery visitors from 4–9 p.m. 13 N. San Francisco. 779-3790. www.serenasupplee.com
The Artists’ Gallery
Out to prove that good things can indeed come in small packages, the Artists’ Gallery will be hosting their inaugural “Small Gems” show. The nationally juried exhibition will feature the best in miniature masterpieces of all mediums. See? It’s not the size that counts. Admire the adorable art work and snag your chocolate. 17 N. San Francisco. 773-0958. www.theartistsgallery.net
Morning Glory Café
Back open and once again dishing out some of the best love-infused food around, Morning Glory Café will also be displaying new paintings by local multi-media artist Mathilde Gatinois. Swing by to see her beautiful and haunting portraits of friends (imaginary and regular) and be sure to sample Morning Glory’s chocolate offerings. 115 S. San Francisco. 774-3705.
Rainbow’s End and Jemini Shoes
With local art on the walls, live music, tasty treats and fun stuff to buy, it’s no surprise that Rainbow’s End is always packed every First Friday. Stop in this month to see the colorful, semi-surreal landscape paintings by local Steve Lawton, hear music by Acoustic Soup, enjoy appetizers by Mountain Oasis and have a little chocolate for dessert. 12 E. Rte. 66, Ste. 101. 774-5535.
Utopia
Although nearly everything in the store could be considered art in one form or another—from the handcrafted jewelry, to the creatively recycled fashions, to the hand-drawn stickers—this month Utopia will be putting the spotlight on Eric Retterbush and his colorful, abstract illustrations in watercolor, pen and resin that “chronicle a boy’s journey home.” The dark chocolate and wine is just a bonus. 6 N. San Francisco. 286-7174.
The Hallway Art Show
There couldn’t possibly be a chocolate-themed Art Walk without local chocolatier Uncle Buzz, and so he has reopened the Hallway Art Show (i.e. the main hall within the Masonic Temple). The featured artist will be John Running with his chocolate-related photographs, which should be sure to tantalize in more ways than one. Check out the space and sample the best of the best chocolate treats from beloved Uncle Buzz. 107 E. Birch.
