THU, NOV. 19

Ever Heard an Electric Jug before? Described both as the bastard son of Woody Guthrie and as a transgendered punk Bessie Smith, Pokey LaFarge adds a modern pop style to his love of American roots music. Together with his band, collectively known as Pokey LaFarge & the South City Three, the effect is reminiscent of an earlier era playing with 21st century technology. All they need to complete the look is a washboard—oh wait, they’ve got one. Catch them at Mia’s Lounge, 26 S. San Francisco, at 10 p.m. To find out more, call 774-3315 or see www.pokeylafarge.net.

Like an Irish Chupacabra Hailing from Ireland, Máirtín de Cógáin and Jimmy Crowley are the founding members of Captain Mackey's Goatskin and String Band. Máirtín is an acclaimed storyteller, actor, singer and musician and Crowley has 10 albums and is considered somewhat of a legend in Irish music for his work with Stokers Lodge. See the whole quartet perform rousing Irish tunes and tell a tale or two in the Zane Grey Ballroom at the Hotel Weatherford, 23 N. Leroux, at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $22. For more info, call 779-1919 or visit www.captainmackey.com.

Dude! Attention all extreme snow-sports fanatics: Teton Gravity Research has returned with their newest high-def ski and snowboarding film “RE: Session,” to be screened at the Orpheum Theater, 15 W. Aspen, at 7 and 9 p.m. There will be door prizes and gear raffles, and all money benefits the Kachina Peaks Avalanche Center.
Tickets are $10 or $8 for students. To get more info, call 556-1580 or see www.tetongravity.com or www.kachinapeaks.org

FRI, NOV. 20

They Really Add Ambiance Atlanta-based quartet Tealights creates a style they define as “electro-classical pop,” combining dramatic vocals with an ethereal instrumental backdrop. Promoting their debut EP Take Us By Sea, the Tealights will be performing at Mia’s Lounge, 26 S. San Francisco, with Phoenix band Really Big Birds and regular Flag visitors What Laura Says. For more info, call 774-3315 or visit www.myspace.com/tealightstheband.

No Guilty Conscience Here California-based experimental rock duo Peace of Mind Orchestra, comprised of Ari Leopold and Matt Engel, try to avoid using loops and sequencers and instead each play multiple instruments to give the sound of a four to six-piece band. Catch the trippy, ambient funk as the two perform at Flag Brew, 16 E. Rte. 66, at 10 p.m. To find out more, call 773-1442 or see www.myspace.com/peaceofmindorchestra.

What More Can We Say? As our favorite ridiculously attired, sometimes-cross-dressing, zombie-and-robot-loving, ’80s-inspired party band, we never miss a chance to see Yin Yang and Zen Some in Flag (they’re from Sedona). Come see them get all fired up (and sweaty) as they perform for the second year in a row at Strut, Flag Live’s annual fashion show. We’ve heard rumors about what they might be wearing, but you’ll just have to come see for yourself. The all-ages show is at the Orpheum, 15 W. Aspen, starting at 8 p.m. Entry is $5 at the door or two items of non-perishable food and all proceeds benefit the St. Mary’s Food Bank. For more info, call 913-8669 or check out www.myspace.com/yinyangshows.

Sweatin’ to the Third-Wave Heat up your cold, winter night by gettin’ down to Flag’s original ska band the Skanksters. You can bet the whole room will be sweating when they play the Monte V, 100 N. San Francisco, at 10 p.m. Call 774-2403 to find out more.
